Unknown is Best. Creative Diary.

I wasn't too sure what to write for this little diary entry, but I did know that today I wanted to write. Maybe not a lot, but some at least.

Some words. Yes, that will do just fine.

So I sat down to write, but nothing was coming to mind. No ideas, no words, just silence.

With nothing naturally arising I thought a change of focus might be required. So I moved my eyes from the laptop across to a very nice publication that just landed on my desk - 'Passing Places' a reflection on the album The Remote Part by Idlewild.

This publication has been lovingly put together by the band's singer Roddy Woomble alongside Tom Johnson as a journal about music, creativity and landscape.

The introduction ends with the creative pair noting that they would like the publication to be part of a series - but in reality don't know if that will be the case. And I liked that thought, that honesty. The idea that you might put a thought, a dream, a wish out into the world without worrying too much about how or even if it might come true.

The piece then concludes with a lovely quote from poet Edwin Morgan that reads, quite simply:

'Unknown is best'

I thought, yes I like this a lot.

It comes at a time that I've been using these diary posts to reflect on the past and start to think about the future of the studio. But the idea of forming a rigid plan seems somehow counter intuitive to how we go about things.

So perhaps rather than looking to plan, we just need to put some varied hopes, dreams and wishes out into the universe and see if they might come to life rather than drilling down to the final detail and in doing so removing some of the magic and joy from things.

Graeme's writing this little creative diary as we celebrate running Jamhot for 15 years and look towards what the future of our creative & design studio holds. We're writing these for our own amusement, but if you do find yourself reading along then a big hello to you.
